CARDIAC TELEMETRY SEMINAR -One day Program - 9.00 am to 3.30 pm

The content of this webinar is considered to be essential knowledge for any nurse working in the areas of ward telemetry, coronary care, critical care and emergency nursing.  It is also applicable for the ward nurse wanting to upskill their knowledge on interpretation of arrhythmias.  If a nurse agrees to work in any of these areas, the content discussed in this webinar is considered foundational knowledge or essential competencies.  Understanding the foundation of electrophysiology and the three parameters or measurements will aid the nurse in recognition of any deviation from the normal 

Learning Objectives
1. Identify the three essential parameters (values) that assist with analysis of a rhythm strip. 
2. Demonstrate how to work out these three parameters: PR interval, QRS width, QT interval.
3. Discuss the responsibilities of a nurse working in areas where there is telemetry or monitored patients.
4. Explain what the nurse would observe for on a rhythm strip of a patient who has been admitted with a drug overdose or post myocardial infarction.

  • Telemetry -  Placement of leads:
  • 12 lead ECG electrode placement
  • Indications for telemetry
  • Electrophysiology: Measuring of values (Parameters)
  • Sinus Rhythm
  • Recognition of abnormal:
  •      Bradycardia
  •      Tachycardia (sinus tachycardia, types of SVT, )
  •      Ectopic Beats (Atrial and Ventricular Ectopic Beats, Premature Atrial or Ventricular Complexes, Unifocal or multifocal)
  • R on T phenomenon
  •  Life Threatening Arrhythmias:
  •        Main focus on polymorphic VT and PEA
  •        Polymorphic VT and drug abuse  (Methamphetamine )
  •  Recognition of Chest pain on the 12 lead ECG and rhythm stip
  • Characteristics of stable angina and unstable angina
  • Recognition of ST elevation and ST depression

Who can attend:
This seminar relates to the nurse in the Cath lab, CCU, critical care, cardiothoracic ward,  emergency department, community and as well as the ward nurse wishing to increase their knowledge of clinical assessment skills and intervene in a situation where a patient's condition is deteriorating.
